Ship Crashes Near Earth Islet, Rumors Ship Was Shot Down

EARTH ISLET - Phoenix Acolyte Deebrane String was admitted to Keajra Hospital in Spinwheel City today where she remains in stable condition, in the coma induced by regeneration treatment. Registered Companion Zai Xian remains at her Taksimi's side.

Early this morning, Chief of Staff Fa-Le Yan heard Deebs's mayday calls as her ship entered the Paquin system, already disabled and out of control. Deebs's great skill as a pilot allowed her to ditch her crippled craft safely in the Keajra Sea near Earth Islet..

Spinwheel Search and Rescue were quickly able to locate the Phoenix Acolyte, who had ejected just before impact, and transport her to the hospital. Yan has sealed the crash site, forbidding entry to everyone, including the commanding officer of Alliance cruiser Zheng He, who has promised repercussions from Yan's adamant refusal.

When asked about the report from a source wishing to remain anonymous that Deebs was being fired upon by a hostile craft as the Martian neared Paquin, Yan refused comment, and when pressed about the nature of the damage to Deebs's craft, Yan replied sharply that she can neither confirm nor deny the existence of any craft, damaged or otherwise.

The uncooperative Guild Chief of Staff also refused to acknowledge any link between the suspicious crash and the overdue return of the High Priestess. When the total failure of communications links to the Orion home world of Rigel VII was mentioned, Yan stated that the Orions are allies of the Companion's Guild and the High Priestess has accepted the Orion Ambassador as an honored guest. She claimed that there is no connection between the simultaneous communications blackout, disappearance of the High Priestess, and the damage to Deebs's craft.

The Cortex News Service will continue to investigate these mysteries, and will bring you up-to-the-nanosecond coverage of the Guild administration's coverup of these important events as they develop.

Firefly-class ship in Spinwheel

The ship in downtown Spinwheel.
SPINWHEEL - There is a Firefly-class parked above Central Plaza in downtown Spinwheel. The ship is there as part of the celebrations for the registration of Ti Qi Companion House on Dragon's Egg. Registered Companions will be having a banquet on the ship which will stay in Spinwheel for the rest of the month.

It did come as a bit of the surprise to Spinwheel Mayor Tillery Woodhen, who hadn't been advised of the plans. The mayor's office didn't return waves requesting comment, but people in the apartment below the mayor's penthouse at the Paquin Arms were awakened by a sudden yell. They're not sure what he said, but the did hear this clearly, "Where the hell did that come from! Wait, is that my car? They landed on my gorram CAR?!?"

The mayor was last seen being led to his office by aides carrying large bottles of mao tai.

Residents and tourist are welcome to visit the ship during its time in Spinwheel.

Paquin Mercury

SPINWHEEL CITY - The redevelopment of Spinwheel is moving ahead with the construction of a new mall, new buildings for CNS Corp. and UAP sector offices and a remodeled hospital and government house.

The Spinwheel City Shopping Mall, at the south end of High Street, opened two weeks ago to a gala celebration. Along with streetlevel stores facing Theatre Street, there are two more levels of stores with a dance club on the top floor, offering views down Court Street to the port.
Directly across from the mall is the remodeled Kejara Hospital. And an expanded government house has been built covering the entire block just east of the central square. The courthouse, UAP Tower and CNS HQ have all been remodeled to allow for a more open feeling on High Street. The street itself has been widened to allow for better traffic flow through the commercial district. The tram will continue to keep its route through the area.

Paquin Bank Victim of Robbery

SPINWHEEL - Stunner fire rattled through Paquin this morning as the Paquin Planetary Bank was robbed by what was described as four heavily armed women.  Witnesses say they stormed in discharging weapons and demanded "everyone get on the f...ing floor this is a robbery"

One customer was not fast enough and was  shot in the leg. The group demanded the vault be opened and took 500,000 Alliance credits before exiting the bank and boarding an awaiting shuttle in a nearby park. Authorities have no accurate descriptions other than lots of tattoos, two members have red hair, another black.

Reputation states that the girls have been robbing banks in other systems and they are an efficient crew in making no errors and are challenging.

Crime Rate Rising in Shuttleside

SHUTTLESIDE, Paquin - Residents are warned to be careful in the Shuttleside area of Spinwheel City.

The area, just south of Paquin Interplanetary, has seen an increase in muggings and assaults in recent weeks. The narrow streets of the area and the transitory nature of the population have lead to the unwary being targeted by unsavory elements.

Spinwheel Division told the Mercury that the narrow streets prevent patrol by police. Captain Ceasar Otsuka said that the police do plan to increase foot patrols when manpower allows it.

SPINWHEEL CITY - Dyssen Corporation has moved its headquarters to downtown Spinwheel.

The move is the latest in the recent redevelopment of the city's business district. The company joins CNS Corp. among the major corporations that call Paquin home.

CNS Corp., owner of the 'Verse Voice newswave and of this newspaper, has redeveloped it's own headquarters building just east of the Paquin Planetary bank. Along with media, the company also does construction management and consumer products such as vehicles and small electronics.

Other companies have moved business into Spinweel as well. Londinium Gearworks, a spacecraft builder, has opened offices on Theatre Street. A number of shops have also opened along the street, becoming the leading shopping district of the city.

CATZ has also started to increase the stock being held at their warehouse next to Paquin Interplanetary Spaceport.

Discussions have started about starting a stock market with its base in Spinwheel City. Watch the Paquin Mercury for more details in the future.
